Gain Energy Independence with the Federal Solar Battery Rebate

The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program

The Australian Government has launched an ambitious initiative to make renewable energy storage more accessible for households, businesses, and communities. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program, announced by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), promises a substantial upfront discount on the cost of installing a home solar battery system. With an expected program budget of $2.3 billion, it is set to transform the way Australians generate, store, and use solar energy.

Why Solar Storage Matters

Australia is already a global leader in rooftop solar, with millions of households saving on energy bills by producing their own electricity. But without a battery, much of this solar power can go unused during the day and is instead fed back into the grid. Electricity to keep the lights on after the sun goes down then needs to come from the grid, often at the highest peak rates. Home batteries change this equation by allowing unused daytime solar energy to be used at night, or in overcast conditions, and in many cases can provide complete energy independence.

By storing excess solar energy, households can use their own clean power at night or during cloudy periods. Batteries also provide backup during power blackouts and help reduce demand on the grid during peak times. With battery prices falling and technology improving, the government sees storage as the next big step in the renewable energy transition.

How the Solar Battery Rebate Works

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program began on 1 July 2025. It provides eligible households, small businesses, and community organisations with an upfront discount of up to 30% off the price of solar batteries, including installation. For example, installing a 10 kWh battery that has previously cost around $10,000, can result in saving of up to $3,000 thanks to this scheme.

The discount is delivered through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Under this system, SunSmart Sunshine Coast offers the full discount upfront, and then we transfer the certificates to the Clean Energy Regulator, which the reimburses the discount. This ensures you pay the lowest possible amount upfront and the installation period is minimised, allowing you to start saving even more in the form of even further reduced, or even eliminated electricity bills, immediately.

Eligibility and System Requirements

The program is designed to support safe, reliable, and future-proof energy storage. To qualify:

  • Approved products: Batteries and components must be listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) Approved Batteries list to ensure quality and safety.
  • Timing: The battery must be installed on or after 1 July 2025, and officially complete once a Certificate of Electrical Compliance is issued.
  • Size: Eligible batteries must be between 5 kWh and 100 kWh in capacity, with STCs claimable up to 50 kWh of usable storage.
  • Accreditation: Installations must be carried out by professionals accredited with Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA).
  • Virtual Power Plant readiness: All systems must be capable of connecting to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Participation in a VPP is optional but ensures future flexibility for grid support.

Benefits for Households and the Electricity Grid

The government estimates that an average household could save $700–$1,600 per year on electricity bills, with around $300–$900 of that coming directly from using stored solar energy instead of drawing from the grid.

Beyond financial savings for home and small business owners, solar batteries will play a crucial role in supporting Australia’s energy transition to achieve its future net-zero energy goals. By supplying energy during peak periods and balancing demand, solar energy storage helps reduce reliance on fossil fuel generated power and makes the grid more stable and resilient.

A Tapering Program

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is not a permanent subsidy. The discount rate will be reviewed annually and gradually reduced through to 2030. This is designed to reflect falling technology costs while encouraging strong initial uptake in the early years of the scheme.

The program aims to boost the installation of more than a million new batteries by 2030, accelerating Australia’s path toward a cleaner, more reliable energy system.

A Smarter, Cleaner Energy Future

At a national level, the program is another step toward meeting Australia’s renewable energy and emissions reduction goals. By investing in batteries today, the government is not only helping families save money but also setting the foundation for a smarter, more reliable and cleaner energy future for all Australians.

For households and small businesses, the decision to install a battery is becoming more compelling than ever. With generous upfront discounts, increased electricity bill reductions, and the added security of blackout protection and energy independence during extreme weather events, batteries are now within reach for many more Australians.
